“The Lee Resolution”, of independence was actually passed on July 2 with no opposing votes. A Committee of Five had drafted the Declaration to be ready when Congress voted on independence. The date 7/4/1776 Declaration of Independence was adopted by the 2nd Continental Congress.

JULY 2, 1776 - Continental Congress declared independence from Britain. (Declaration of Independence was approved July 4). John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail about July 2: “It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty." #USA
